Hiring Spotlight: Kansas Coalition for Common Sense
1, What's one thing your team is moving the needle on right now, and how do new hires play a role in that?
We serve as a resource and communication hub for organizations, advocates, and community leaders who want to make Kansas a better, more welcoming place for all families. Our focus is on strengthening communication and providing tools so partners can share their organization’s values, expertise, and story effectively. We do this through technical communication support, research, and training. We help groups shift toward narrative strategies that are clear and relatable. New team members play a critical role by bringing fresh energy, diligence, and innovation to our work. Whether through accountability work, content design, message research or storytelling, new employees help to amplify real Kansans’ voices.
2. How would you describe the kind of person who thrives on your team?
In our work, we need passion for the change we want to make in Kansas. That means we work hard and smart, prioritize collaboration and curiosity, and work to grow and improve in all we do. We work across many different communities and partners, so flexibility, humility, and the ability to “read the room” really matters. It is also critical to be able to adapt to changing work and be a self-starter!
3. What's something your team is excited about internally that outsiders might not know?
We’re incredibly excited about several new projects we are starting this fall, including Stories of Real Kansans. Within that project, we are excited to explore Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) in our approach to partnerships and storytelling. It's reshaping how we think about power, not just in terms of policy wins, but in everyday relationships and lived experience. That lens is leading us to invest more in deeper listening to communities who are too often left out of advocacy spaces.
4. What advice do you have for someone applying to your open roles?
Show us how you think. We care less about traditional résumés and more about your work ethic, values, attention to detail, and approach to complex and nuanced work. If you’ve ever helped build something from scratch, supported your community in an informal way, or solved a messy problem, that is all relevant. Be honest about what you’re still learning, we value people who are willing to work hard and grow with us.
5. If your team had a motto, what would it be (official or unofficial)?
“Always learning”
As an organization that focuses on communication, messaging and media, it is critical that we are always learning new techniques, tactics and approaches to the work we do. We want new ideas and innovative strategies to help make Kansas better.
6. What's one lesson your org has learned the hard way in this work?
Trust has to be built through relationships and progress takes time. It can’t be rushed to meet a grant deadline or election cycle. Our work is challenging and change can be slow, but we keep showing up and working together.
